The first divine service for the departed in 2015 was to take place on Sunday 1 March. For this special service District Apostle N Barnes travelled to the Nobuhle bishop area where he served the congregation of Fernwood Park.
The beautiful pre-service musical programme set the scene and made the congregation all the more receptive to the sermon, which was based on John 3:14-15. The congregation was reminded of the faith that is needed in Jesus Christ whom God sent into the world so that through Him the world could be saved. Whoever believes in Him will not perish, but will have everlasting life.
Those gathered were also reminded that the special task for this unique service is to pray and intercede on behalf of those who had passed out of this life. This may be for those who are known to us, but also for them who are unknown. The district apostle called upon Bishops A Lutuli and G February to assist in the serving of the congregation.
After the congregation had been prepared spiritually through the sacrament of Holy Communion, the district apostle dispensed the sacraments for the departed souls. Apostle G Mintoor and Bishop L Vaaltein were the vessels chosen as intermediaries for this purpose.
Upon completion of the divine service the district apostle spent time engaging in conversation and greeting the members.
