After much preparation, the first Sunday of 2013, 6 January, finally dawned bringing with it the celebration of the New Year’s Day divine service conducted by District Apostle Barnes in the congregation of Hazendal.
On this occasion the District Apostle was accompanied by the Apostle J Kriel, as well as Bishops L Masule, N Warner, A Witten and P Lambert, and the congregation looked forward to the blessing of our heavenly Father for the year ahead.
One could feel the joy and excitement of the members as the opening hymn, “Another year is dawning” (Hymnal 478) was sung. The text word for this divine service, given by our Chief Apostle, was from Ephesians 6 verse 14: “Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, and having put on the breastplate of Righteousness.”
The District Apostle urged the congregation, firstly, to stand firm in the gospel of Christ and in the Apostle ministry, and secondly, to equip ourselves with the armour of God by girding our waist with the truth of Jesus Christ, and by putting on the breastplate of righteousness.
The New Apostolic Church celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2013, and the District Apostle reflected on the pioneers who had laboured tirelessly to establish the work of God. He highlighted the desire of our Chief Apostle that 2013 would be a year of profession, in that we declare and practise our faith in the gospel of Christ and His promised return.
The serving of our brethren from the beyond with Holy Communion was concluded with a solo flute rendition of the hymn "When strikes the hour?" (Hymnal 435)
