The congregation of Somerset West on the outskirts of Cape Town was expecting their apostle, M Arendse, to serve them on the first Sunday of Advent.

However, when the officiant walked into the packed church hall it was not the apostle but District Apostle N Barnes who had come for a surprise visit!

For the congregation this surprise was a beautiful start to the festive season. Also present was retired Apostle W Kühnle from Germany accompanied by 16 visitors who were on holiday in Cape Town. The festive Advent divine service was based on the Bible text taken from 1 Peter 5: 8, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." In his message to the congregation the District Apostle explained the significance of Advent and how we understand and firmly believe that the Lord’s promise will be fulfilled. During the period of Advent we more than ever earnestly prepare to be ready for His return. For this very reason the admonishment of the words in the text need to be taken to heart.

Apostle W Diedericks and Bishop L Lakey were called to assist in the serving. Adding to the joy of Advent 2 babies were sealed during this special divine service. All too soon the visit of the District Apostle came to an end, but the Advent joy created is sure to be remembered for a long time!
